Introduction. A coal dense medium separation (DMS) plant makes use of the principle of density separation to upgrade mined coal and produce metallurgical coal or power station coal. The objective of the DMS plant operation is to produce coal product within a minimum quality specification and maximum possible yield (England et al., 2002).
Once again, the existing plant density gauge (P) and control system misinterpreted the higher rock content in the high-reject feed coal as too much medium and reduced the density. As such, the SG*50 for particles in the DMC circuit changed from about 1.54 SG to 1.51 SG when switching from a low-reject to high-reject feed coal.
A new model was proposed to predict the distribution rates of anthracite in a coal preparation plant with a compound input of density and process parameters. These included the density of dense-medium suspension d, the content of magnetic substance c, the inlet pressure of dense-medium suspension p and the coal feed rate r.
The dense medium cyclone (DMC), also known as the heavy medium cyclone, is the work horse of modern coal preparation to upgrade run-of-mine coal in the 0.5–50 mm size range. Its working principle has been well documented ( King and Juckes, 1984, Svarovsky, 1984, Wills, 1992, Chu et al., 2009a ). A small improvement on the …

Heavy medium coal washing technique can remove gangue, perform deep coal desulfurization and ash reduction, improve the calorific value of coal, and provide conditions for clean and efficient combustion of coal [1], [2], also the coal with deep deashing can be further utilized as material [3].The implementation of heavy …
An efficient dry process is therefore required. Dry dense medium separation offers good efficiency but is still unproven in practice. A pilot-scale dry dense medium plant is in operation in China and the South African coal industry, through the Coaltech research programme, plans to evaluate this technology in the near future.

For plants equipped with dense medium vessels, intermediate particles, between 1 and 10 mm, are generally treated in a dense medium cyclone (Fig. 6). Dense medium cyclones can also be used to treat even larger size fractions (up to 3 in. or more in some cases) often replacing the vessel circuit, which is a popular processing option in …
The medium, being costly, plays a crucial role in determining the economics of any preparation operation. Dardis (1987) quotes figures of 20–40% of dense-medium plant operating cost being attributable to medium loss for plants engaged in mineral separations employing ferrosilicon as the medium. The figure is 10–20% in the case of …
