Lignite and Brown Coal

Abstract. Lignite and brown coal are common names for coals having properties intermediate between peat and bituminous coal as a result of limited coalification. In general, brown coal designates a geologically younger, ie, less coalified, material than the firmer, fibrous lignite. In the ASTM classification,both kinds of coal are termed lignite.
