The tumbler itself is probably OK as it is. Before I messed with the mechanism, I would try using a dedicated polishing bowl, and lots of pellets in the polishing stage. Run the tumbler near full for most efficient operation. Be aware that modifications may cause decreaserd efficiency, or create enough vibration to damage some softer …

The HF, I believe, is a Chineese knock-off under the brand of Chicago Power Tools (or something like that), but it should be a decent mill. Unfortunately, I just snapped my belt the other day when making my first batch of BP in a long time (college and women kind of kill my pyro budget), so it looks like I'll have to scrounge around for a ...

Thanks Ron. The first two safety warnings in the manual indicate not to use with wet or water based media, and to not use for tumbling stones. Metal tumblers are not usually "heavy-duty" enough to run rocks. The plastic barrel may get beat up, springs may break, you could end up with rust on the rod, and/or you may have leaks.
Run the tumbler near full for most efficient operation. Be aware that modifications may cause decreaserd efficiency, or create enough vibration to damage …

Charcoal and potassium nitrate can be purchased pre-milled now, as well. Using a rock tumbler, you can make black powder faster by milling the charcoal and potassium nitrate separately. 3 component milling takes much longer to make good powder. Don't anybody get your knickers in a twist over that statement.

I currently have the 6 pound rock tumbler from harbor freight that has been modified according to the skylighter website. My black powder works great but I can only get about a quarter pound out of every 5 hour run. I was looking around the internet and found a rock tumbler. The small 3lb rock tumblers are fine for a start and milling 100 to 200g of anything, but you might possibly outgrow that soon enough. The double-unit tumblers here at the Harbor Freight stores seem to be popular mill, and a better choice (in terms of motors) over the single 3lb unit.
